Love Our City OCP Engagement

Creating an inspiring community vision as the foundation for a new OCP.

THE CHALLENGE

The City of New Westminster began a two year OCP review and update in early 2014. To create a strong foundation for the detailed policy work, the City wanted to engage a broad cross section of the community to develop an inspiring and compelling vision.

THE RESPONSE

Centred around Valentine’s Day, MODUS facilitated a large public visioning process called “love our City” that involved hundreds of community residents to imagine the City’s future. The visioning process involved a huge public design charrette followed by a 3-day stakeholder design workshop and later a public open house to explore options for the future of neighbourhoods and how the city could grow over time. The process involved the public, a Stakeholder Advisory Group, and City staff working closely with a team of designers to create a vision in compelling images and drawings of what the city might look like in 2041.

The final outputs helped to develop the draft vision statement and overarching goals for the revised Official Community Plan.
