Co-Creating a Civic Vision for the Holland Lands.
THE CHALLENGE
The Town of Gibsons civic precinct – known locally as the “Holland Lands” – is defined by a collection of buildings that house community facilities surrounding an underutilized hillside open space overlooking Winegarden Park and the harbour. The Council-appointed Holland Lands/Cultural Corner Revitalization Select Committee was tasked with assessment of current and future needs, phasing and implementation and ultimate studying the feasibility of revitalization.
THE RESPONSE
MODUS convened a co-creative design workshop – along with collaborators Scot Hein and Cal Srigley – to explore a vision for a new civic precinct on the Holland Lands. Three redevelopment scenarios were explored as a means to ‘test’ a range of respnses to site and resource constraints and opportunities. While the conceptual masterplan was ultimately tasked with a short list of objectives – including: providing a strong focal point for the Town of Gibsons; addressing space needs for the Public Library, Town Hall, Regional Museum, School District, Arts Building and Visitors Centre; exploring additional space needs/opportunities from other complementary uses (not currently located in the area); and, enhance the public use, comfort and enjoyment of open (green) spaces – the collaborative design and visioning process revealed a more immediate need to carefully consider and align the interests and expectations of the individual Committees and their respective memberships.
