Shaping Maplewood into a Vibrant Village Centre Through Community-Led Planning.
THE CHALLENGE
Situated close to the gateway to the North Shore and a major industrial waterfront, Maplewood has long been a sleepy residential neighbourhood ‘on the way’ to Seymour and Deep Cove. The District of North Vancouver wanted a plan that would implement the OCP’s vision of Maplewood as one of the District’s four primary growth centres, while ensuring livability and sustainability.
THE RESPONSE
MODUS was hired to leas the development of the Area Plan and Design Guidelines for Maplewood Village Centre. The Plan and Guidelines were born out of an extensive community engagement process, including community workshops, online questionnaires and a large stakeholder and community design charrette. The ultimate document therefore drew on the collective knowledge, desires, and expertise of local businesses, organizations and residents to shape the future and vision of their community.
The Design Guidelines outline urban design guiding principles for the public realm and streetscape, followed by detailed descriptions of street cross sections, water management, colour and materiality of each precinct within Maplewood to reflect each of their unique characteristics.
